Charitable Allies is a law firm for nonprofit organizations. We assist nonprofits across the country to incorporate, develop organizational documents, and file with the IRS (and, where applicable, the appropriate state agencies) for tax exemption and charitable status recognition. We also regularly litigate on their behalf. We’re organized and operated as a “low bono” 501(c)(3) legal aid law firm for nonprofits, which basically means we’re a law firm for small businesses that happen to be nonprofits!

This is an exciting Staff Attorney I and Program Manager – Transactional opportunity, based in Indianapolis IN, that offers a variety of complex legal matters and projects; and provides general nonprofit counseling and other transactional work across a wide range of nonprofit organizations. Come help us save the turtles!
- A wide range of responsibilities in the areas of corporate transactions, commercial contracting and general tax-exempt organization counseling.
- Providing strategic legal advice and support to nonprofit organizations.
- Conducts project and legal matter management with the assistance and supervision of the managing attorney; consistently exercises sound independent judgment.
- Identifies and drives development of legal strategies for the Company; manages client expectations to balance requirements and competing priorities; provides useful legal advice and alternative solutions.
- Expected to work independently and cross-functionally to bring team members together to efficiently and effectively execute the company’s growth strategy.
- Brings practical solutions and nonprofit acumen to all transactions and initiatives.
- Must have the ability to think strategically, assess the legal and nonprofit operational implications of initiatives and provide thoughtful, timely, practical and business-savvy advice.
- Requires strong organizational skills, the ability to manage multiple high-priority projects simultaneously and a willingness to be flexible in a fast-paced environment.
- Acts as trusted advisor for nonprofit organizations; has strong grasp of tax-exempt environment and the industry; provides legal as well as practical advice within the appropriate business context; understands and manages client expectations.
- Ensures efficient and timely communication with colleagues and team members.
- Demonstrates leadership and the values of the Company.
- Legal experience of 0-3 years
- Strong drafting and communication skills
- Strong interest in transactional law, with specific interest in tax-exempt organizations
- Willingness and ability to handle a wide range of legal issues for various constituencies, with a strong focus on customer service
- Strong people management skills
- The ability to think critically and make clear and well-reasoned decisions; strategic and innovative thinker who can bring value to his or her clients and find creative solutions to complex legal problems
- Ability to see and handle more than the legal issues of a project; strong, pragmatic business acumen with the ability to recognize the business consequences of legal advice
- Exemplary personal and professional integrity and business ethics, as well as respect for others
- Excellent communication and relationship-building skills and the ability to work collaboratively with colleagues and clients across various disciplines and cultures
- Juris doctor degree from an accredited law school
- License to practice law in Indiana or another jurisdiction
Compensation and Benefits
Pay is excellent for the sector! Base annual salary commensurate with experience (between $51,400 and $66,400) plus monthly and annual bonuses (totaling up to $13,600). Additional benefits include options such as our 403(b) Retirement Savings Plan with a 5% employer match, a QSE-HRA ($5,250/individual or $10,600/family), paid vacation and sick time, paid opportunities for professional development and continuing education, and other personal and professional benefits. We will also pay relocation expenses and Indiana bar prep for the right candidate.
